Create A GEDCOM File

  • On Ancestry, click on the Trees tab and select the tree for which you want to create a GEDCOM.
  • Select Tree Settings from the tree name menu in the top-left corner.
  • Click Export tree from the Tree Settings page.
  • You will see a message saying, “Generating a GEDCOM file.”
  • Select Save as, Save Target as, or Save Link As from the drop-down menu.
  • Choose a location on your computer and click Save.

Problems Creating A GEDCOM File From Ancestry

While creating a GEDCOM file, it gets stuck and says the tree is generating for more than 15 minutes; you can try to refresh the page and try to create the GEDCOM file again. If you get the same message again, try to clear your cache and cookies and start all over.

  • On your computer, first open Google Chrome.
  • Click on the three dots at the top right of the browser.
  • You will find More tools and then Clear browsing data in the Menu.
  • Next to “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files,” check the boxes.
