Copy the entire folder of family tree and paste it on an external hard drive
Windows user – Please click on start and type in search box documents and you will get documents folder option, left click on top search result and then right click on Family tree maker folder and select option Copy. Please go to your hard drive folder and open it. Click any where inside hard drive and right click, select an option paste.
Back up on cloud
If you are using cloud service as drop box, then you can save the entire folder on drop box.
Sync it with ancestry
You can sync your family tree maker files to ancestry and later you can use it as back up. Here you may not be able to get personal note and personal medias of the person. Please contact us for detailed information about syncing to ancestry.

Compacting a tree file
Compacting a family tree file is a best practice and it should be used by user often to make sure their FTM is working properly.
Follow the steps – Open family tree maker software, click on tools and select compact files. Now you can browse the file that you are using and want to compact. You should compact the file until you see 0%.
Family tree maker updates
Sometime your FTM software may work sluggish or give you trouble while you are using it. You should check for family tree maker updates and update your software to have better performance.
Perform the steps to update your software – Open family tree maker app and click on help. Once you click on help you will get an option “check for updates”, left click on it and update your software.
Check for windows updates
