What’s Not Synced with FamilySync in Family Tree Maker 2024

Much of the content in trees — i.e., all core data, including people’s names, relationships, facts, sources, citations, repositories, and most types of media — is perfectly synced between Family Tree Maker 2024 and Ancestry. However, since the trees created by Ancestry and Family Tree Maker are in different formats, there are certain kinds of information that are either totally unique to Family Tree Maker or Ancestry and therefore cannot be retroactively transferred from one program to another.

So if you’re looking forward to learning more about What’s Not Synced with FamilySync in FTM 2024. Then you should definitely read through this content thoroughly.

Well, keep in mind, you should never think of your Ancestry tree as an accurate full backup of your FTM. Uploading your tree and then downloading it onto another machine is definitely not an ideal method for transferring a tree between computers. To ensure that your unique Family Tree Maker data remains secure or to transfer it for use on another computer, we highly recommend that you create regular, complete manual backups of your tree.

Other Changes With FamilySync

Whenever you sync an Ancestry tree and a Family Tree Maker tree, keep in mind the following differences:

Paragraphs:

  • Paragraphs break will not show in the citation detail of Source Citation Info.

Home Person:

  • When syncing with Family Tree Maker (if this is your only change), the home person will not be changed on Ancestry.

Media Linked to Relationship:

  • After syncing, a media linked to a relationship will be linked to both individuals (instead of to the relationship).

Resolving Conflicts:

  • The Resolve conflicts dialog does not display a conflict if any “Preferred” option has been changed on Ancestry and Family Tree Maker (fact, parent, spouse, etc).

The Resolve conflicts dialog does not display a conflict if there were both new and existing persons added to FTM (New Person) or pictures for the same person added to Ancestry, such as;

  • Repositories
  • New person
  • Pictures of the same person

If you unlinked or deleted a fact, source citation or media item from Ancestry or FTM and made an edit to the same item from another linked computer, it will disappear after your next sync (except Source Repository and Source Title).

Syncing an alternate fact on an individual with their preferred fact removed after it is changed to another alternate will result in that individual being renamed to no-name when the change and alternate fact removal take place.

The “Overwrite conflicts with FTM data” option on the Parent Child Relationship Conflict Resolution window does not allow you to resolve any conflicts between parent-child relationship data.

Facts

For the most part, fact-related data (date, name, and location, description [including custom and alternate facts]) is displayed the same in FTM (Family Tree Maker) versus the tree that resides on Ancestry, although a few fact types will display differently in both applications. For example, the fact type of ‘Physical Description’ in FTM is simply ‘Description’ within trees, which will display in Ancestry.

Person, Fact, Citations, and Relationship Media

  • The caption of a media record assigned to a source in FTM will match the title that is assigned to the same media in Ancestry.
  • Media that is associated with the connection between two people within FTM will maintain that connection as media associated with each individual within Ancestry.
  • The records that you find on Ancestry and then merge into FTM will not be re-uploaded to Ancestry.
  • Also note that the documents in FTM will only be uploaded to an Ancestry tree if they do not exceed 15 MB and they are also in these formats: .pdf, .docx, .txt, and .rtf.
  • Photos that you upload to your Member Trees on Ancestry have a maximum file size of 15MB, so if there is a photo in your desktop tree that is bigger than this limit, it will either not upload (if you are using a Mac) or will be resized (if you are using a Windows PC) upon being transferred to Ancestry; but this will not change your original file. In addition, all photos must be in one of these formats: .bmp, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, .ico, .j2k or .jp2.

Sources, Citations and Repositories

  • The ways Family Tree Maker and Ancestry are cited differ. The former allows for multiple people to be linked to a single citation from multiple sources, whereas the latter restricts citation to its maker and is connected only to individuals. When a Family Tree Maker data file is uploaded to Ancestry, the citations will be replicated for each individual in Ancestry where applicable, because it is uploaded as an individual. When you download or create a new tree from an Ancestry tree to Family Tree Maker, the same citation replication occurs there, too.

Smart Stories

  • Smart Stories created in Family Tree Maker are converted into .rtf text files when uploaded to an Ancestry tree. Although the actual story resides outside of the Ancestry tree, you can download the document or access your stored Smart Stories using Ancestry sync functionality.
