You already know that GenSmarts is a program that helps make research recommendations for people in your RootsMagic file. So, if you have GenSmarts installed, you can highlight any person you want in your file. To do so, you must select ‘Tools > GenSmarts Suggestions’ from the RootsMagic menu, after which RootsMagic will display a list of research suggestions for that particular person.
Now, you must also be wondering, ‘How does GenSmarts come up with these suggestions, right?’ well, it creates a profile of your ancestors based on where and where they lived. Then, it matches that profile with its inventory of known records to predict the record trail that your ancestors might have left behind. You need to understand that each suggestion will include the logic behind the recommendation and where that type of record could be found. Moreover, you must remember that these are suggestions… and GenSmarts does not know if your ancestor is in a particular record; it is only the type of record your ancestors are most likely to show up in.
Furthermore, if a record type is available online, you can click on the ‘Look Online’ option, and GenSmarts will attempt to find your ancestor in those available records. Besides, GenSmarts also knows which online sites have which records; therefore, it knows whether to search FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindAGrave or any other website with this kind of record type. However, even if more than one site has the records, GenSmarts will default to the free website.

What if a suggestion is available from a pay site only (such as Ancestry), and you do not have a subscription? Well then, you need not worry. GenSmarts will take you to the ‘Teaser page’ of the site so you can get an idea of whether the records exist for your ancestors. Afterward, you can add these suggestions to the RootsMagic person’s to-do list and then print out a list of recommendations you need to pursue a particular site. And then, you can just take the list to the local library or Family History Center later to do the actual search.
NOTE: You should know that GenSmarts primarily focuses on US, Canadian, and UK records, but there is little support for documents in some other countries.
